Two hours in, eight to go. I'm in it for the long haul - BBCFour's mammoth documentary about the Vietnam War is completely gripping. This war was the backdrop to my childhood, on the television news every night; we'd be hushed so my dad could listen, but nobody ever explained what it was all about. This is epic television; watching these first episodes - 1858-1961 and 1961-63 - I'm shocked at how much I didn't know.

What I know is that my husband, one month after we were married was drafted for this so unnecessary war.

I remember attending a debate at school by our sixth former's on the Vietnam War; the first debate I had ever heard. It was certainly the issue of my teenage years.

I'm glad he came home to you safely, Janet. It was shocking to have it brought home how very early on the politicians were fully aware that it was unnecessary/unwinnable - and yet carried on regardless. It must be harrowing viewing for anyone who lost a son or husband.

Are you watching the series, Veronica? It's a commitment - 10 hours - but it's so well-made that it holds your attention.

We have a Vietnam documentary showing here in the USA but it is by Ken Burns. Maybe we will see the BBC one too but it make take a few years. I very much enjoy British TV!

It's the same series, Kay - Ken Burns and Lynn Novick. It has been getting excellent reviews over here.
