Absolutely loved On Chesil Beach - and Saoirse Ronan is breathtakingly good on that excruciatingly clumsy and repressed honeymoon night. In fact, I thought it was miles better than the book which I never found entirely convincing. Ian McEwan has adjusted the ending and it works.

Mary, do you ever sleep or just do nothing? I feel tired just reading your blog which is a whirlwind of activity! Just how do you find the time to do it all when you work as well? Is there some sort of time dimension you operate in that I don't know about? Anyway, I thoroughly enjoy reading about your exploits and love the recommendations.
I still have this in my shelf to be read; wondering how they can make a film out of such a slim little book but films have been made out of short stories so I should know better than to ask that question!
Well, think of Brokeback Mountain - that was a long-ish short story!
I am a great do-er of nothing, Veronica! But I think I have more energy for going out now than in my younger days, when I worked much longer hours. And I don't waste time waiting for friends to decide if they want to come along; if you need three weeks' notice to make arrangements - sorry, I'm out the door on my own! (I do have a fast response team but you can count them on the fingers of one hand!)
