The King's Speech was every bit as wonderful as I expected and the cinema was packed.

People applauded at the end, which always seems slightly odd after a film.

I can just about remember when they used to play the National Anthem as people scuffled out of their seats to go home. (There was always a rush to get out the door before it began.)

For once, it would have seemed entirely appropriate to stand for two brilliant performances by Colin Firth and Geoffrey Rush.

  3. I'm really looking forward to seeing this - especially for spotting Jennifer Ehle in the background...

  4. I hadn't realised she was in it, Simon - and it threw me when I saw her, I couldn't think why she looked so familiar! Only a small part, though.

  5. I loved The King's Speech. Everyone applauded at the end here as well. I am surprised that it came out in the US first...it's been out for a while here. I also loved seeing Jennifer Ehle! I like to think they had a fun reunion!

  6. I was really miffed that it came out in the US first, Rachel! And I haven't seen Jennifer Ehle in anything for ages. I'd completely forgotten that she and CF were once an item. Oh well, all she had to do was look surprised and drop a curtsey ...

  7. Saw this with my husband yesterday, and I must say it's one of the best films I've seen. Ever. I just loved it, and I've been thinking about it all day today. Colin Firth was mesmerizing, making me think he really was King George. My mother says she remembers these speeches from all her growing up, and it was all the more wonderful to her.

I visited you today, finding your name and knowing how much my father loved the name Mrs. Miniver. So, nice to 'meet' you.

  9. Just saw this today (loved it!) and the same thing happened in our theatre, people started applauding at the end. I, too, was rather surprised by it but will recommend the film to one and all. :)

  10. Oh, is that all Jennifer did...? I love her, but she's done so few films recently. One to look out for is 'Alpha Male' - about a family reunion for a son's 21st birthday. Ehle plays the mother, and is the lead in the film. It's an unusual and moving film, with some extraordinary performances.

  11. Hello, Susan, how nice to have some new visitors via Simon.
And Simon, it's a bit more than that, but quite a small role as Geoffrey Rush's wife. I missed Alpha Male but now I think of it I haven't been to the cinema in ages.
