Winter Work, George Clausen (1883-84)
The Beanfield, Letchworth, Spencer Frederick Gore (1912)
Thirty years and twenty miles separate these two paintings of the Hertfordshire countryside (both on loan from the Tate) which I saw when I went to a fascinating exhibition yesterday at lovely Compton Verney.
How fast things were changing.
I love the Clausen best. I haven't been to Compton Verney either.
ReplyDeleteOh, Sue, you'll have to go sometime. It's a really lovely place for an afternoon out, anyway, and they do put on some fascinating exhibitions. And they're just the right size. (I've been feeling a bit blockbuster-ed out lately!)
ReplyDeleteOh I love that George Clausen painting!
ReplyDeleteI started off falling head ove heels for the turnips but after looking at both for a while, now cannot choose between the two. Ax
ReplyDeleteI haven't been to Compton Verney either. I certainly will now. I know what you mean about the relief of seeing a smaller-scale exhibition - it looks wonderful
ReplyDeleteCharlie, I shouldn't think it's too far from where you are? It's a lovely place to visit.
ReplyDeleteClare, hello. And thank you for visiting.
Cait and Magic Bean, I'm always playing 'Which one would I take home with me?' It would be very hard to choose ... but I'd probably take the Gore if I got the chance! If only.
