All across the nation, we settled with dinners on our laps to watch Great British Bake Off.
But tonight I poured a glass of chilled wine, cut a wedge of homemade tomato tart, scattered with dill flowers and sprinkled with white balsamic ...
And although Mary Berry would have noticed that my pastry wasn't sufficiently rested and had shrunk-
It didn't have a soggy bottom.
So there!
On the other hand, I have never made Florentines. Or, for that matter, a 3-D biscuit ski resort.
Over to Simon, who will have his very funny commentary up soon.
I can't abide Mel and Sue, either! And the way the contestants fulfil TV stereotypes (young pretty one/old one/man in loud jumper with terrible teeth). But I do love Mary Berry. I do wonder, though, whether this perfectionism shakes people's confidence - when as you well know, if you chuck eggs, butter and sugar together and don't burn it, you usually achieve something quite satisfying even if it looks a bit wonky. If you want every biscuit looking the same, buy a packet of digestives.
ReplyDeleteWe've just started watching the first series on youtube so a lot of catching up to do but it's going to put a few pounds on my waistline. It's impossible not to wander over to my chocolate stash while everyone is baking cakes and other tempting things!
ReplyDeleteThat's not the right spirit, you should get baking too, Darlene.
ReplyDeleteYou have upped the ante Mary. I am making a tomato tart this weekend and now I must find some dill flowers. Would fennel flowers do instead? My cooking lately has taken a nose dive. I have made some truly awful messes. Does this ever happen to you? Or you Sue if you are still there?
ReplyDeleteFennel would be fine, Lucille. I often pick some growing wild on the beach and use it on a tomato salad. And, yes - I'm perfectly capable of disasters, usually it's the simple things that go wrong when I get bored and I take my eye off the ball (or the timer!)
ReplyDeleteI'm on a bit of a roll at the moment, though - feeling inspired, so let's hope it lasts!
