This is a lovely book for this time of year and Diana Henry's recipes remind me that autumnal food is probably my favourite. I made her wheaten bread this morning, a sweeter crumb than my usual soda bread.
Last night's dinner was a veal chop with Nigel's pear, watercress and fennel salad an old favourite from here.
And this Victoria plum cake is in the oven right now.
On the autumnal downside, there is an enormous wasps' nest right on top of the trapdoor into the loft.
It's a good job I am being so ruthless with my cookery books. It's opening up some space for new recommendations.
ReplyDeleteI had a cull a few months ago; if I'd never made anything from it, it had to go. But there's books I never use now that hold lovely memories of meals long gone! And it's so hard to resist buying more!
ReplyDeleteThe pear and pecan upside down cake in Diana Henry is very good, Sue.
ReplyDeleteIt all sounds absolutely delicious. Now... Do I need another cookbook....
ReplyDeleteIt's definitely feeling autumnal now. I made the very same cake for the allotment cafe last plum season after seeing it in the Waitrose Weekend and it was a big hit--thank you so much for reminding me about it--must do again! And I do have the most terrible time resisting new cookbooks...! xx
ReplyDeleteYou know you don't, Gina!
ReplyDeleteIt's a good bake for this time of year, Kristina. I made a similar one with mirabelle plums a couple of weeks ago, but they're past their best now. The ones I picked last week were a bit flabby.
I will have to look for that cookbook. It sounds wonderful. Beautiful cover!
ReplyDeleteEverything I've made from it has turned out well, Sunday. And I can't resist the titles she chooses - like, Crazy Water Pickled Lemons!
