Who would ever have predicted that Borgen, a series about Danish coalition politics, for heaven's sake, would make compelling viewing ...
But it was gripping. And so I was looking forward to this new Danish period drama 1864, which stars all our favourite actors from Borgen/The Killing.
Oh, dear. Can anybody watch this without going, Hey, It's Birgitte ... Look, there's Troels! Godnat Troels... And isn't that Kasper Juuls?
And then comes the sinking realisation that Danish politics might be gripping. But the Schleswig-Holstein Question, even with sex/bestialism/Troels is kind of boring.
And every time you yawn, you've fallen behind with the subtitles.
Lord Palmerston said: 'Only three people have ever really understood the Schleswig-Holstein business - the Prince Consort, who is dead - a German professor, who has gone mad - and I, who have forgotten all about it.'
Don't think I'll be hanging in there long enough to make that four people. Although when I see my  Danish sister-in-law next week, I'll be interested to hear what she thinks.

You do get the impression that Danish-Equity doesn't have many members, don't you?
I think this might be good for a home-grown audience but Danish nationalism doesn't really travel.

Well I've just seen Matthias Schoenaerts and Sally Hawkins a few too many times in quick succession for my liking and am wondering where all the other actors have got to.

It was nagging at me all the way throgh Far From the Madding Crowd, as I couldn't think why Gabriel Oak was so familiar - and then I remembered the German in Suite Francaise. But Sally Hawkins hasn't cropped up that often? Or has she? Made in Dagenham was on TV this week but I've seen it before so didn't watch it again.

Schoenaerts was in A Little Chaos which unfortunately I had only just seen. Sally Hawkins was Mrs Brown in Paddington and then the mother of the autistic boy in x+y. I hadn't seen Made in Dagenham so watched it last night. I haven't seen Suite Francaise.

I suppose they can't help it if things get released back to back - but it does sound rather too much of a good thing.

I am so glad that I don't own a TV...
