Since announcing that I really must read The Masters ('the best academic novel in English'), I've discovered that the Strangers and Brothers cycle is being repeated this week on Radio Four. So that's my lunchtimes sorted. Timely, as I am forced to admit that I've rather lost the McMafia plot; anybody else losing track of who's who? All the younger characters look exactly the same!

I have to say I'm struggling with 'McMafia' but am hanging in on there...

Thanks for the heads up on the C.P. Snow stuff; I'll have to catch up on I player but there aren't enough hours in the day. Oh well, at least I can crochet and listen!

I've spotted cherry blossom!

Sure it wasn't blackthorn, Veronica?

The prospect of more James Norton hasn't been enough to steer me towards McMafia. I'm in the mood for something warm and fuzzy during this January deep freeze. A customer returned our copy of The Ladies in Lavender yesterday, it made me wish there was something like it to look forward to at the cinema. Paddington 2 is about as warm and fuzzy as it's been lately!

Try the CP Snow serial, Darlene - not warm and fuzzy, but better than anything on TV at the moment. But you can see why I've resorted to Midwife! It is so past its sell-by date, but it's undemanding.

We watched the first episode of McMafia but did not continue; too much blood. I've also been listening to "Strangers and Brothers" this week as well as enjoying Muriel Sparks, Eric Gill and the letters between Winston and Clementine. Radio gets my vote over TV any day of the week. Monty Don and his paradise gardens tonight was quite dreadful.

I've given up on McMafia, Sarah - there's a new series of Endeavour, no contest! But you're right, there's so much more on radio.

I don't think it was Blackthorn, Mary. It was a tree on a street in the middle of Bedford...

I'm not very good on plant names, Veronica, but there's a white blossom that comes much earlier than others - there's several trees down the street here, but they don't produce sloes so maybe blackthorn isn't the correct name.
