The amaryllis bought in a pound shop three years ago has bloomed for the first time.
It has had many last minute reprieves from the dustbin.
But I hate giving up on an amaryllis - because they can surprise you. And they do seem to thrive on neglect.
Now all I want is for the rather expensive dud that I bought from Kew to follow its example.

When it got cold I brought last year's bulb in from the cold, bunged it into a corner in the cellar, and forgot about it. Lo and behold, on Valentine's day, I looked over and saw that it had a ghostly white stalk, two ghostly leaves and a bud! I brought it into the light and it greened up and bloomed - only 4 blossoms - a week later.

Hello, Deb. It's amazing how they seem to grow by inches overnight.

I'm giving one a second chance. It has only produced leaves but I am hoping that next year it will go the whole hog and flower.

Mine have all been hopeless this year, Lucille. Leafy and flowerless. Last year some of them flowered twice so maybe they're exhausted!

Magnificent when the do bloom. I had a pure white one once, I wonder why I didn't keep it?
