My late-night Amazon habit has been greatly curbed so I was overdue for a lapse. And browsing through my incredibly long wishlist tonight - which is really only a memory jogger for all those largely unavailable out-of-print books that I've seen mentioned elsewhere - well, tonight I came upon a couple of bargains. A Marghanita Laski satire and an Elizabeth Jenkins, both 25p, and the latter turned out to have been reviewed by Darlene, which is probably why it ended up on my wishlist in the first place. Well, it had to be done, don't you agree, because I shouldn't think they'll  turn up in the Oxfam shop any time soon.

I'm old enough, just about, to remember Marghanita Laski on TV in the old black & white days. Wasn't she on The Brain Trust, or something like that? What a gorgeous cover to that book, that would encourage me to spend 25p plus p&p instantly!

I think she was, Margaret, but I don't remember her. It is a gorgeous cover - I'm not counting on my 25p copy being so lovely. It's 'used-acceptable' but the others are £20 and £50 which is quite a jump.

Oh, happiness, our library has both of these... Their copy won't have that lovely cover either, so it's a treat to see it. I'm eager to read more by E.J. after enjoying her book about Jane Austen, her memoir and The Tortoise and the Hare. (Finally, I agree... I'd read anything Darlene recommended!)

EJ's biographies often turn up in charity shops,Audrey, but the novels are harder to get hold of. I've read Harriet, which I enjoyed, and Dr Gully (not sure if that counts as novel or biography) but The Tortoise and the Hare is definitely the best.

'Brightness' is my favourite Elizabeth Jenkins, I do hope you enjoy it.

If it's even better than Tortoise and the Hare, then it really must be good, Anonymous. Unfortunately, it's coming snail-mail from the US. But while I'm on a roll, I checked the library catalogue - and I've just ordered Robert and Helen, which I didn't realise they had.

Toasted English...what a find, Mary! Wish I could reach through the screen and grab it. I remember visiting the dusty den that is the Reuse Centre and spying a copy of The Tortoise and the Hare...reading it, and then whipping back for Brightness a few days later. A great deal at twice the price!
