Alas, not nearly enough Mrs Gaskell - and far, far too much of the deeply-uninteresting on-and-off love life of Nell Stevens. Sorry, Nell - but I just don't care!
Of course, I should have read the author's blurb before I started. You teach creative writing ... enough said!

Can creative writing be taught?

I always think that the books that emerge from those courses seem formulaic, like a set exercise in writing.

I always try to avoid any book that says it's a love story...I'm sure I've missed out on some fabulous books because of this!

Yes, but think of the ones you've avoided, Vronni!

Thank you for this, I won't now, waste any money.

I was disappointed, Toffeeapple. It sounded so promising.

Oh I was the exact opposite - wanted far more of her and wasn't interested in Mrs Gaskell's story! But I suppose it depends what you expected when you went in. (I also love her book Bleaker House, about trying to write a novel.)

I shouldn't complain, Simon - in fairness, it's there in the title.
